A main goal of the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Montclair State University (New Jersey, USA) is to prepare teachers who possess the "literacy, critical thinking and technology abilities associated with the concept of an educated person." Of major importance are issues of social justice and the development of critical thinking within the social and political democracies with the United States. Students must reflect carefully on what it means to use digital technologies to enhance teaching and learning on our campus and the wider world. Of recent interest to the MSU academic community are the ways in which teacher education faculty understand and meet the needs of the millennial learner — for whom computer technologies are transparent and an assumed way of life. A recently developed M.Ed. degree program in educational technology embodies the ideas presented in this paper — balancing state and federal mandates for technological proficiency, college-wide goals of educational renewal, and the wider social need for media literacy and technological proficiency among teachers and students. The audience for this paper is teachers, teacher educators and community leaders who are continuously challenged by the largely unrealized potential of media technologies in the context of teaching and learning. Inquiry, discourse, equity, authenticity, leadership, and service are democratic values that together provide the ideal for educational technology in the United States. I use the term communification to denote the communal and communicative potential of educational technologies to support democratic education, while exploring the dangers of commodifying teaching and learning through capitalistic structures that work against educational renewal. The general question that guides this discussion is: "What is the nature of the relationship between the technologies of classroom instruction and the goals of democratic education?"

Vanessa Domine received her Ph.D from New York University and is currently an Assistant Professor of Educational Technology in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Montclair State University in New Jersey (USA). She developed and directs a new masters degree program in Educational Technology and teaches undergraduate and graduate-level courses in educational media and K-12 technology integration with an emphasis on media literacy. She served as a media educator and technology consultant at the Media Workshop New York in the mid-1990s, and worked with New York City school teachers and principals to develop site-based vision and implementation of new media and technology to support curriculum and instruction. At MWNY she developed mentorship and sabbatical programs for high school and college students and in-service teachers enrolled in communication and education programs at New York University and Bank Street College. Her various publications focus on the challenges and opportunities of technology and media literacy in schools. Her pedagogical focus is the critical and creative uses of media and technology to support educational renewal.
